What we will and will not publish, how we source it, how often we check it, and what happens when we get something wrong.

Independence

Rankings are never sold and are never influenced by commission rate. We accept no free products, no sponsored placements, no paid rankings and no gifted equipment. There is no arrangement under which a manufacturer or retailer can affect where a product appears on this site.

The buyer-first rule. Where a retailer other than our affiliate partner is genuinely the better buy for you, we say so and link them anyway. King Arthur Baking is the standing example: an employee-owned company with the best free instructional library in this category, selling a live starter and crock set we would recommend to a serious gift-giver. We earn nothing from them, we link them, and we mark those links as ones we do not profit from.

We say this because commission-first ranking is the failure mode of every affiliate site, and stating the rule publicly is what makes it enforceable against us.

Sourcing standards

Every factual claim that is not plainly our own reasoning gets a source.

  1. Manufacturer documentation — spec sheets, product listings, care instructions. This is where every specification on the site comes from, and each product card names it.
  2. Published food-safety guidance from a named authority for anything touching salt ratios, brine concentration, temperature or spoilage. Linked, not paraphrased from memory.
  3. Retailer listings for current price and availability, rendered live from a data feed and attributed.

Not acceptable, ever:

  • A figure recalled from memory and presented as fact
  • Another affiliate site’s untraceable claim, repeated
  • An invented price, star rating, review count, temperature, timing or specification
  • A health or medical benefit claim, from any source

Safety content carries a higher bar

Pages touching food safety — is fermenting vegetables safe and how to make sauerkraut in a jar in particular — attribute every safety claim to a named, linked authority, and state plainly that they are general information rather than personalized advice.

If a safety claim cannot be sourced, it does not go on the page. That is why we publish no salt percentages of our own and point at tested recipes instead.

What we do not claim

  • No testing. We have not tested this equipment and never write as though we have. See how we pick.
  • No credentials. Scooter M. is an enthusiast. No chef qualification, no nutrition certification, no editorial board, no “medically reviewed by”.
  • No health claims. No gut-health, probiotic or nutritional benefit claims about any ferment on this site.
  • No reviews or testimonials. We sell nothing directly and have no customers, so there are none to publish and none will be invented.
  • No self-authored rating schema. Editorial opinions appear as prose. We emit no Review or AggregateRating structured data for products, because we run no testing that would justify it.

Update cadence

  • Prices: refreshed daily, automatically, and stamped with the verification date. Data older than 48 hours stops rendering.
  • Every roundup: reviewed quarterly for availability, whether the pick still holds, and whether the “skip this” entry is still correct.
  • Safety guides: reviewed whenever a cited authority changes its guidance.
  • How we pick and this page: reviewed on any change to method, retailers or affiliate programs joined.
  • Everything, annually by 1 December, ahead of the January season this site is built for.

When a page changes materially, its last-updated date changes with it.

Corrections

How to report one: email info@crockandculture.com or use the contact form. Tell us the page and what is wrong.

What we do: a factual error is corrected as soon as we can verify the correction. Substantive corrections are noted on the page itself rather than quietly edited away, and the last-updated date moves. A typo gets fixed without a note.

What we will not do: remove or soften a negative assessment because a manufacturer asked. If a criticism is factually wrong we will correct it; if it is an opinion you disagree with, it stays.

Affiliate links

Every commercial link is marked with rel="sponsored nofollow" and routed through a redirect at /go/ so the destination stays a configuration entry rather than being written into the content. Disclosure appears above the first affiliate link on every page, under every buy button, and in the footer sitewide.

The full FTC disclosure is at affiliate disclosure.
