What this site is, and what it is not
A small independent site about starting sourdough and home fermentation, written by one enthusiast and funded by affiliate commissions.

What it is
Crock & Culture is a site about starting sourdough and home fermentation. Not about mastering it — about the first jar, the first loaf, and the shopping decisions in front of them.
There are 39 content pages here across five sections, and they answer three kinds of question: what do I need to buy, which of the options should I buy, and what do I do when the thing in the jar is not behaving.
Who writes it
Scooter M. I am an enthusiast who is genuinely into this. I read the manuals, compile the published specs, and do the math. No lab coat.
I am not a chef, a baker by trade, a food scientist or a nutritionist, and I hold no certification in any of it. Nobody on this site does, and nothing here is written by an editorial board or a team of experts, because there is no board and no team.
How it is funded — stated up front, not buried
Affiliate commissions. Crock & Culture is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program under the tracking tag crockandculture-20. If you buy something through a link here, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
That is the entire business model, and it is worth being clear about what it does and does not influence. It means we have a commercial interest in you buying something. It does not pay for rankings — we accept no free products, no sponsored placements and no paid rankings, and where a retailer we earn nothing from is the better buy, we say so. See the full disclosure and the editorial policy.
We have not tested this equipment
Said outright, without hedging, because it is the most important sentence on this page.
We do not own a test kitchen. We have not baked in every Dutch oven we recommend, we have not proofed loaves in every basket, and we have not run a fermentation weight through a hundred jars. When a site in this category tells you it tested twenty-six proofing baskets, ask how — and ask who, and ask for the protocol.
What we do instead: compile the published specifications from each manufacturer’s own documentation, check those specs against the task a beginner is trying to do, read the care instructions, cite published food-safety guidance for anything touching safety, and show live prices refreshed daily. The method and — more importantly — its limits are set out in how we pick.
What we deliberately do not write about
Health claims. No gut-health benefits, no probiotic claims, no nutritional advice. Several sites in this category lead with exactly that and cite nothing at all. We hold no credential that would make such a claim worth anything, so we make none. This site is about equipment and technique.
Alcohol home-brewing. Beer, wine and mead are adjacent hobbies with their own equipment and their own experts. Out of scope here.
Fabricated anything. No invented prices, no invented star ratings, no invented review counts, no testimonials. There are no customer reviews on this site because we have no customers — we sell nothing directly — and inventing some would be the fastest way to deserve none of your trust.
Why this site exists
Because nobody in this category will tell you what things cost. We read eleven publishers who rank for these searches while planning this site, and nine of them do not show a single price anywhere. Not one prices a complete beginner setup.
So that is the thing we built first: a complete first setup, priced at three budgets, kept current. Everything else on the site supports that page.
